A Story about Hard Work

“A man with a great desire to become rich was once told that if he were to work hard, he would be become a prosperous and very wealthy man. The hardest work the man knew was digging ditches, so the man set out doing the hardest work he knew and after months of laborious, very intense work, the only thing he had to show for it was a lot of holes in the ground and an achy back. His actions clearly showed his commitment, effort, energy and his willingness to sacrifice, but it is clear that his effort, energy and dedication lacked the proper direction for him to achieve his goal of acquiring wealth.” - John C. Maxwell

The point of this story is the need and the importance of having direction. Without direction, effort, energy and sacrifice mean nothing. To expand upon this example: athletes develop, maintain and prepare their bodies to better meet and exceed the demands of their sport. I have seen many athletes train with hard effort in various ways and with zero guidance or direction (training plan). I have seen many of these same athletes breakdown; both mentally and physically. Mentally, they break because their rigorous training did not provide them with the performance benefits they were hoping to achieve and they break physically, because they did not devote time in the off-season and pre-season to multi-focused training system that addressed their individual and specific needs. When an athlete is willing to commit himself and he has a training plan that is clear, progressive, and purposeful an athlete will begin to see, experience, and feel benefits that he may never have felt before.
